Online vs. In-Person Classes: Which is Best?

by Lily Winborn

Three years have passed since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic, but there is still a lot of uncertainty about whether to take in-person or online classes.

Even though there are more students enrolled in online classes than in-person classes, there are benefits to both class types. It is just a matter of deciding which class type works best for you and your schedule.

Online classes are a great choice if you are a busy student with a job, a family, or any other kind of full-time responsibility.

Online classes allow you to do your homework at your own pace, as long as you turn assignments in by the due date, because you are not tied down to a certain class time.

Even when you take classes online, there are still opportunities to get involved and socialize on campus by joining intermural sports, going to sports games, going to events on campus, and by joining Calhoun’s many clubs and organizations.

However, taking online classes may cause you to feel like you are missing out on the “college experience,” because you are more limited on interactions with fellow students and instructors. If you feel this way, in-person classes may be better for you.

In-person classes are a great choice if you have more time on your hands and if you want to have more social interactions on a daily basis.

In-person classes allow you to engage in your classes by speaking out in class discussions. In-person classes also allow you to know your instructor on a much more personal level in comparison to online classes. This helps you to be more comfortable asking your instructor questions on assignments.

No matter which type of class you choose to take, you will still get an excellent education as long as you apply yourself. So, your decision should not be based upon which class type gives you a better education.

So, there is no “best” class type to take based on which will give you the best education. The class that is best should be based on which class type better fits into your schedule based on your responsibilities.
