Spring is here along with its unpredictable weather. North Alabama is blossoming, but along with this beauty comes severe thunderstorms and tornados.
Knowing some basic weather-safety facts will help keep you and your family safe.
The safest areas inside your home, according to safety experts, are the basement, interior rooms, bathrooms, closets, hallways and other rooms without windows. These same experts recommend you do not stay in high-roofed buildings such as gyms, halls, and warehouses and if you are in a mobile home, go to the nearest storm shelter. These shelter locations can be found here.
During dangerous weather, it is recommended that you have blankets and pillows to cover your head and body. Other safety measures may also include using helmets to protect your head. These items will help you stay safe from falling objects and flying debris.
Weather radios, batteries, bottled water, portable radios, televisions, and flashlights are all good things to have on hand. Weather radios can be purchased at drugstores, grocery stores, and big box stores. Make sure for Madison County you use FIPS code 001089. These codes can be found at www.weather.gov/hun/nwr-huntsville.
While spring can be a beautiful time in North Alabama, please know that it comes with some extremely dangerous storms. Be weather aware, and most of all be safe.
