Transferring to UAB?

On February 26, representatives from the University of Alabama at Birmingham visited the Sparkman building of Calhoun’s Huntsville campus. UAB is the 3rd argest university in the state of Alabama. It is most known for its extensive involvement in healthcare. However, the number of representatives from different divisions displayed the school’s vast educational opportunities. There were tables from the following: the School of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Health Professions, and Public Health.

The only department missing was the School of Nursing, the 3rd largest at UAB. As the state’s largest public employer in healthcare and Alabama’s premier academic medical center, UAB’s nursing program has a wealth of opportunities waiting for interested students.

I had the opportunity to speak with a UAB transfer admissions counselor, Kylie Moody, and ask her a few questions about transferring. When asked what’s unique about UAB that would make someone want to go there, she stated, “UAB is unique for being in Birmingham and having multiple opportunities for students.” Being one of the largest cities in Alabama, Birmingham has many activities that students can participate in, from learning opportunities at UAB’s numerous hospitals and clinics to internships at the Alabama Wildlife Center to proximity to civil rights history. The school offers many opportunities to explore knowledge in many forms.

If you’re unsure about what they’d like to study, Moody said, “Research your interests and there’s likely room to change majors if needed! If you’re interested in a major, feel free to speak to its advisor and look at the opportunities.” The UAB website has pages for each major offered and directs you to whom to contact if interested.

UAB is an excellent transfer option due to how much support students get throughout their transfer process. There is plenty of readily available information on credit transferring and instructions on the process on UAB’s website. There’s also an on-campus organization for transfer students to help them transition into the university. If you’re worried about acclimating to campus as a transfer, know that many students transfer to UAB yearly. The university’s 2022 student body data showed that the number of transfer students is around 50% of the incoming freshman class.
