Animals and humans have always had a special bond; from just a pet to being man’s best friend or even a child figure. Some may even say the two balance each other out. Animals have done great things for a lot many; things humans may never be able to repay.

There have been many incidents where pets have even saved the lives of their caregivers. They can sense things beyond our ability, which is very unique. There are even pets who sense when their person is about to have a serious health crisis, sensory overload, anxiety attacks, and PTSD episodes, such as service animals.
However, there are certain animals that help with particular issues dependent on the severity. Research shows that animals have a positive impact on the mental and spiritual health of mankind. This has also been proven in Animal-assisted therapies.
Huntsville/ Madison area high school senior Kaitlyn has dealt with anxiety which resulted from a bad car accident. She is a volunteer with a local animal therapy organization, ‘Step by Step Therapeutic Horseback Riding and Petting Zoo’. “Honestly, the positive mood change in the individuals when they are around the animals. It also helps many conquer their fears of certain animals, such as horses, llamas, and chinchillas,” she said.
Along with that, she gave a testimony as to how the therapy has helped her as a person who has dealt with anxiety. “Equine therapy has helped me become braver. Because when you are around them fear is not optional. I would definitely recommend animal-assisted therapy to anyone. Based on my experience and others I have encountered while volunteering, it has left great results for everyone,” she said.
The Williams family who owns ‘Step by Step’ has done awesome work with their organization. They have offered their services to daycares, nursing facilities, schools, and other community events. Animal-assisted therapy helps with other disorders as well, such as depression, social anxiety, and much, much more. Huntsville is privileged to have several organizations that provide animal/ equine therapies and volunteer opportunities for those who would like to give a helping hand.
