?Apps for Self-help?

An Opinion Piece by Allison Rossell

Good day to all you Calhoun students!

In my recent research, conducted by surveys of my classmates, friends and family; I have discovered that many people are struggling with their mental health due to COVID-19 restrictions. There is no mistaking the impact it has had on our lives. I am here to help! Here are a few free apps I have found helpful in my own mental-health journey.

  • InnerHour

Make self-care a priority with InnerHour

“Find the strength, skills, & resources to overcome depression, beat anxiety, tackle stress, sleep better, & improve your overall mental health.” www.theinnerhour.com

  • I am – Daily affirmations reminders for self-care.

“How many negative thoughts have been endlessly repeating in your mind? The daily affirmation help rewire our brains, build self-esteem, and change negative thought patterns. Empower yourself by verbally affirming your dreams and ambitions. Choose from many daily intentions and set reminders to be delivered throughout the day.”

  • Serenity: Guided Meditations allows you to learn a variety of meditation and mindfulness techniques that aims to bring a sense of peace, calm and happiness to your life.

Foundations: Expand your skills and learn about mindfulness, self-awareness, values and goals
Sleep guides: A selection of guided mediations designed to guide you to sleep using relaxation techniques, peaceful music and tranquil sounds.
Stress relief: soothe anxiety with relaxation and mindfulness techniques to calm the mind and body.
Quick meditations: short sessions to practice your skills or provide a sense of serenity and calm from the stresses of your day.
Daily meditations – Different meditations each day to help maintain regular practice.

Some other helpful tips: stay busy! pick up a new hobby, try to learn an instrument, or learn a new language.  Occupying your free time will help lessen the impact of social isolation by giving your mind something else to focus on. If we allow ourselves to wallow in what we cannot have, we won’t see what we do have. Look at this time as an opportunity to better get to know yourself.
