Become a Voter in 3 Easy Steps

2024 is an election year, and an important one at that. Now is the time to be prepared early by registering to vote.

Step 1: Checking if you are registered to vote

If you aren’t sure if you’ve already registered to vote in Alabama, you can check here. It’ll ask you for your full name and birthday. If you aren’t registered, you’ll get this popup:

Step 2: Registration

There are two main ways that you can register to vote in Alabama.

The first and slightly more convenient option is to apply online. You will need to have a valid Alabama driver’s license or ID card. Go to this site, read the instructions and requirements, and then click “Begin the Application Process” at the bottom of the page. You will be asked for your full name, birth date, and driver’s license number. You may also enter the last four digits of your Social Security number, but this is not required.

The second method is to fill out this form, print it, and mail it to the Board of Registrars. If you live in Madison County, the address is 1918 Memorial Parkway NW Huntsville, AL 35801. If not, there is a complete list of counties and addresses at the bottom of the form.

Step 3: Where to vote

If you aren’t sure where to find a polling place near you, this site has a search function at the bottom of the page to find the closest ones based on your address.

Final notes:

The requirements for being eligible to vote in Alabama are as follows:

  • Must be a United States Citizen
  • Must be a resident of Alabama
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Has not been convicted of a disqualifying felony (or have rights restored)
  • Has not been legally declared “mentally incompetent” by a court

Until the Board of Registrars has informed you that you are registered to vote, you have not been registered. Just submitting the application doesn’t count.

The deadline for registering to vote online and in-person is generally 15 days prior to the election. Mail-in applications must be postmarked 15 days prior to the election.

As a reminder, the Alabama primary is Tuesday, March 5th. The general election will, of course, follow this November.
